Campion College head boy Hamish Swann begins his career incivil engineering next year as the first Civil Project Solutions (CPS)engineering cadet.
Hamish was selected from a strong list of applicants fromlocal high schools.
The CPS cadetship offers a local school leaver a full-timerole on the engineering team at CPS Gisborne head office and paid study towardsa three-year New Zealand Diploma of Engineering (NZDE).
“This opportunity was perfect for me as I wanted to studyengineering but I didn’t want to leave Gisborne,” said Hamish.
“The cadetship will allow me to stay close to family,friends and I can keep surfing and surf lifesaving.”
CPS Director Gretchen Moylan said the cadetship offeredanother pathway for local school leavers who excel in subjects like physics andcalculus.
“We need more local civil engineers coming back and stayingin Tairāwhiti. What better way to not let them leave in the first place,” sheadded.
“I’d like to thank all of the amazing young people who spenttime with us as part of the selection process. It’s a pity we can only take onone cadet.”
Hamish’s father Hayden Swann said the cadetship is great forthe region.
“We don’t have too many opportunities like this in ourregion. It’s a big investment and it’s great to see CPS taking the lead.
“We’re proud of Hamish and excited about what he’s going toachieve.”
